The Breakfast Club, based in the Mtwara district of Southern Tanzania, is committed to developing sustainable feeding programmes in local schools to combat the problem of hunger amongst students.

The Breakfast Club recognises that a long-term strategy is needed to solve the problem of malnutrition amongst school children. We therefore aim to deliver School Feeding Programmes that can be sustained for years to come. Each Feeding Programme will work in partnership with the local community to create a customised project that reflects the needs of teachers, students and parents alike. This may require Breakfast Club investment in fruit trees, planting maize or providing livestock, for example.

The schools and their students will then be given the responsibility to nurture their new business opportunity, generating funds which will feed directly into their school meals programme. In some cases the School's Enterprise Project will raise the majority of funds, while other schools may require more direct Breakfast Club investment. Each case will be different. Our long-term aim is to work with all 23 schools in the Mtwara Municipality - helping 13,200 school children concentrate on their studies, not their stomachs.

Mangamba Primary

The school is set in a rural village in Southern Tanzania and has 247 pupils. We have been working at this school since April 2007.

Mkangala Primary

This school is also based in a small rural village in between Mikindani and Mtwara and supports 561 pupils. We have been working with this school since January 2008.
Our commitment to the community

At both our schools we work closely with the Headteacher, parents and students. A committee of teachers oversees the storage and security of the food and share in the responsibility for the project. Members of staff at the school have signed a contract detailing stakeholder’s roles and responsibilities, so that transparency can be maintained at all times.

Parent-Teacher meetings will inform parents of the details of the project, with members of the Breakfast Club team present. These meetings will also help us discover whether parents can assist in a financial capacity, with cooking or providing food. It is crucial to involve parents so that they can witness what is happening and feel a part of the project. We will provide as many free breakfasts to students in the Mtwara region as possible, based on the funding.

School Enterprise Projects

We are committed to the long term sustainability of our work in southern Tanzania. At our pilot school, Mangamba Primary we now have a fruit garden with 90 fruit trees. The papaya trees are already bearing fruit and this fruit is being given to the children as part of their breakfast. We also have 2 cows at Mangamba Primary, in spring 2009 the milk from these cows will be used to make the porridge and the pupils are already learning how to look after these cows, giving them valuable skills for the future. In January 2009 we will plant fruit trees at our second school, Mkangala Primary.
